Patricia A.'s Story

Life Hi Classmates! To anyone who may remember me, I say hello! I'll be the first to admit that I was never a popular kid, and really had very few friends. But I always wished that I did! I imagine that we all did! I moved away the summer before my senior year, after my parents divorced. My mom and I moved to Wildwood, N.J. which is New Jerseys version of Ocean City, Md. I was pretty messed up from the divorce psychologically, as well as smoking too much pot! But in any event, I ended up dropping out in the middle of my senior year at Wildwood High, class of '74. My mother ended up passing away the next year, which put me in a bigger tail spin, but I persued my dream of playing music and got a band together, and got a gig playing at a local club there for 2 summers in a row. I then moved to Philadelphia, Pa. to continue persuing my dream, and remained there for 6 years performing in clubs and recording several projects which satisfied my desire to give it my all. But the lifestyle was not the best for me and I felt that I needed to come back to Md. to live with my brother Tom, who had moved to Bowie and had gotten married. This began another chapter in my life- the one where I started wondering if I would ever grow up, find a real job, and heaven forbid, ever get married!?!?? At this point I was almost 30(Beginning to get somewhat set in my ways!!), a little bit older, yet better of course! I did establish a group of friends, and a few on again, off again relationships with a couple of guys. The best outcome being my ex suggesting that I apply at Giant Food for a job that would have benefits at least! Which I did follow through with and got the job and lost him!! And now 17 years later I still have the job, have a wonderful husband who is also a musician. He is a drummer and I sing and play guitar and give guit...Expand for more
ar lessons out of my home. We both are involved in our church's worship teams. I sing and he plays drums, as we belong to a non denominational church called Chesapeake Christian Fellowship in Edgewater, Md. We have both been members of the worship teams since we first attended back in 1993. I never would have thought that singing in church would be more rewarding than in any club or in any other format! My husband Ed and I have never had any children, as we both had waited until our late 30's to wed, and we had both been living the 'rock and roll lifestyle', so to speak! And subsequently, I had developed some bad habits, and he had also developed some bad ones too, but I finally took advantage of our employee's assistance program at work and checked myself into a rehab, and cleaned up my act. He was able to clean his up without having to go inpatient, and that is part of the reason that we ended up finding a church home, and a church family who really came to our rescue back in 2003 when we suffered a major setback. I was on my way home from work on Friday, May 30th,2003 and veered off of a 2 lane Muddy Creek Road in Shady side Maryland. I went through a horse fence which the pole broke and impaled the right side of my face. I suffered a traumatic brain injury , lost my right eye, and crushed the right side of my face and was in a coma for a month in the Shock Trauma Unit at U. of Maryland Hospital. I was then moved to Kernan Hospital Neurological Wing for 4 more weeks! But thank God, I was able to return to work a year later, albeit a little bit dazed and confused, but very grateful!! God has been very good to me , and I thank him very often for the friends and family He has given me. I would be glad to hear from anyone who has had any similar challenges, and who is as thankful as I am to be alive and able to work.!! Patti Owens
